Amber Espinosa - School Resource Officer

The School Resource Officer (SRO) program, designed to enhance the safety and security of our local schools. We believe this initiative will significantly benefit our community by providing a dedicated law enforcement officer in our schools, fostering positive relationships, and ensuring a safer environment for our students, faculty, and staff.

The SRO program in Greer County adheres to the guidelines set forth by the State of Oklahoma. These guidelines emphasize the role of the SRO as a law enforcement officer, educator, and mentor within the school community. Our SROs are fully certified and trained law enforcement professionals who have undergone specialized training to effectively handle situations specific to the school environment.

Key Responsibilities and Duties of the School Resource Officer include:

  1. Safety and Security: The SRO will work closely with school administrators to identify potential safety concerns and develop comprehensive plans to address them. They will regularly conduct security assessments, collaborate with faculty and staff to implement emergency protocols, and monitor the school premises to ensure a secure environment.

  2. Law Enforcement: The SRO will actively patrol the school campus, promptly respond to any criminal activity, and investigate incidents that occur within the school's jurisdiction. They will also collaborate with local law enforcement agencies to share relevant information and maintain a coordinated response.

  3. Relationship Building: The SRO will build positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff by engaging in open dialogue, offering guidance and mentorship, and participating in school activities. This approach fosters trust, encourages communication, and provides students with a reliable law enforcement figure they can turn to for assistance and support.

  4. Education and Prevention: The SRO will provide educational programs on various topics, such as drug abuse, bullying prevention, internet safety, and conflict resolution. By promoting proactive measures, the SRO aims to prevent potential issues and equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to make positive choices.

The introduction of the School Resource Officer program in our community will have several benefits. These include:

  1. Enhanced Safety: Having a trained law enforcement officer present on school campuses significantly improves response times to potential threats, mitigates risks, and ensures the overall safety of students, staff, and visitors.

  2. Positive Relationships: The SRO will actively engage with students, faculty, and staff, creating a positive and approachable law enforcement presence. This relationship-building fosters trust, encourages collaboration, and promotes a sense of community within the school.

  3. Conflict Resolution: The SRO will work closely with school administrators to address conflicts or disciplinary matters promptly. Their expertise in de-escalation techniques and mediation will help maintain a harmonious school environment.

  4. Crime Prevention: The SRO's presence will act as a deterrent to criminal activity, both within the school and its immediate surroundings. Their proactive approach will help identify and address potential issues before they escalate.

The Greer County Sheriff's Office is committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and excellence in providing our community with a safe and secure educational environment. We believe that the introduction of the School Resource Officer program will contribute significantly to achieving this goal.
